Money, bills & shopping

Lloyds found 56% of UK adults used AI for money matters in the past year, and six in ten of them used ChatGPT rather than a dedicated app. The specialist apps are narrower. Plum moves small sums into savings without being asked and Amazon's Rufus shows a year of price history, while Phia is listed here as a warning after two data and affiliate scandals.

Kenning's picks

Ranked by Kenning score out of 25. Tools scoring 12 or less are marked not recommended.

1

Plum 18/25

Plum reads a linked current account and moves small, affordable amounts into savings automatically, and its free Plum Plan chat turns a goal like a house deposit into a list of accounts and monthly amounts. The Basic plan is free, and Plum says 150,000 people have used its AI guidance. Regulars in user reviews grumbled in 2026 about price rises and the end of interest on some pockets.

Best for People who struggle to save and want it done in the background

2

Amazon Rufus 18/25

Rufus sits in the corner of the Amazon app for every UK customer and answers questions like which kettle is quietest, or whether a deal is really a deal, using up to 365 days of price history. It is free, and Amazon says 300 million people used it in 2025. It only recommends Amazon listings, sponsored products are being added to its answers, and Business Insider found it had barely improved after a year.

Best for Amazon shoppers checking whether a discount is real

3

Cleo 15/25

Cleo links to a bank account and turns spending into a chat, so asking how much went on takeaways this month gets a straight answer and, on request, a roast. It returned to the UK in February 2026 after four years away, and the useful paid extras cost £12.99 a month. In the US it paid a $17 million FTC settlement over cash advances and hard-to-cancel subscriptions, and individual reviewers still complain about surprise charges.

Best for Younger people who find budgeting apps dull and want spending explained in chat

4

Phia 12/25Not recommended

Phia adds a button to shopping pages that rates the price and lists cheaper matches, including secondhand ones, mostly from US shops. In Nov 2025 researchers found its extension sending whole web pages, including banking and email pages, to its servers, and in Jul 2026 Bloomberg and Ben Edelman showed it quietly claiming affiliate commission on sales it had not referred.

Best for Nobody, until Phia's data and affiliate practices are independently cleared
