Jony Ive

Founder of the design studio LoveFrom and Chancellor of the Royal College of Art12

Sir Jony Ive is a British designer, the founder of the studio LoveFrom and Chancellor of the Royal College of Art. He joined Apple in 1992 and was its chief design officer when he announced in 2019 that he would leave.1267

The Royal College of Art says he holds more than 14,000 patents worldwide. In 2025 OpenAI said it was acquiring io Products, a company he co-founded, in a deal valued at nearly $6.5 billion.314

From Newcastle Polytechnic to Cupertino

Ive was born in London in 1967. He studied industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic, now Northumbria University, and graduated in 1989 with first-class honours.56

After a spell at Roberts Weaver Group he co-founded Tangerine, a London design consultancy. In 1992 he joined Apple as a senior designer.6

Weeks after Jobs came back

Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 and, within weeks, made Ive senior vice president of industrial design. In 2003 the Design Museum gave him its first Designer of the Year prize, for the iMac and iPod.56

The museum credits his innovations with including the iPod, iMac, MacBook Air, iPhone and iPad. As chief design officer he was responsible for Apple's hardware, packaging and user interface, and for architectural projects including Apple Park.25

He described Apple's approach as "fanatical care beyond the obvious stuff" and said the "defining qualities are about use: ease and simplicity." In a 2014 interview he said: "Creative teams are small and very focused." He also admitted that "We can be bitterly critical of our work".51213

Leaving Apple, keeping Apple as a client

In June 2019 Apple announced that Ive would depart later that year to form an independent design company. That company is LoveFrom, which he founded with Marc Newson.17

He had already become Chancellor of the Royal College of Art in July 2017, an unsalaried post. LoveFrom and the college launched the Terra Carta Design Lab with the Prince of Wales in 2021, and LoveFrom funds a scholarship for underrepresented minority design students.2915

Selling io to OpenAI

OpenAI said in May 2025 that it was acquiring io Products, a product and engineering company co-founded by Ive, in a deal valued at nearly $6.5 billion. It added that Ive and LoveFrom remain independent and have taken on deep design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI.34

The IYO name dispute

IYO, Inc. filed IYO, Inc. v. IO Products, Inc. on 9 June 2025. Ive is named as a defendant with IO Products, OpenAI and Sam Altman. AP reported that a federal judge ordered Ive, Altman and OpenAI to refrain from using the IYO mark, or any confusingly similar mark, in marketing related products. OpenAI said: "We don't agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options."101617

In December 2025 the Ninth Circuit affirmed the district court's limited order restraining the use of the IO mark in marketing or sales of related products. It rejected the defendants' argument that the case was not ripe because IO had not released or advertised a product. On 23 April 2026 the district court granted IYO a preliminary injunction against the same defendants. That is preliminary relief, not a final judgment.1011
