Dario Amodei
Co-founder and chief executive of Anthropic1
Dario Amodei is the co-founder and chief executive of Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI assistant. He trained as a physicist at Princeton, and in 2016 he was first author of a paper called Concrete Problems in AI Safety.1358
Anthropic's latest funding round, in February 2026, valued it at $380 billion. Forbes estimated Amodei's own net worth at $15.5 billion in October 2026.1430
From physics to neural networks
Amodei finished his Princeton PhD in 2011, in physics with a focus on biophysics, as a Hertz Fellow. He followed it with a postdoctoral post at the Stanford University School of Medicine. By 2015 he was first author on Deep Speech 2, a speech recognition system for English and Mandarin.4567
He went on to Google Brain as a senior research scientist, then to OpenAI as vice president of research. His own biography says he led the work on GPT-2 and GPT-3, and calls him a co-inventor of reinforcement learning from human feedback. He is an author on the 2017 paper Deep reinforcement learning from human preferences, on the 2020 scaling laws paper and on the GPT-3 paper.4161718
Anthropic
Anthropic was founded at the start of 2021. It raised $124 million that May, $580 million in 2022 and $450 million in 2023. Claude arrived in March 2023, described as an assistant trained to be helpful, honest and harmless.391020
The money since has come in at another scale. Amazon agreed to invest up to $4 billion in 2023, then another $4 billion, then $5 billion more in April 2026 with up to $20 billion promised later. Google committed $2 billion in 2023, CNBC reported, and in November 2025 NVIDIA and Microsoft committed up to $10 billion and $5 billion. A $30 billion round in February 2026 put Anthropic's value at $380 billion.111421222324
Constitutional AI, Anthropic's method for training Claude with a written set of principles, is the subject of a 2022 paper on which Amodei is an author.19
The essays
Amodei sets out his views in long essays on his own website. In Machines of Loving Grace, in October 2024, he argued that "most people are underestimating just how radical the upside of AI could be", and summed up powerful AI as "a country of geniuses in a datacenter".1213
The Adolescence of Technology, in January 2026, turned to the risks. "I believe we are entering a rite of passage, both turbulent and inevitable, which will test who we are as a species," he wrote. He added: "I believe if we act decisively and carefully, the risks can be overcome."13
The Pentagon and the courts
In February 2026 Amodei wrote that he believed "deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies". But he drew two lines. Anthropic said talks with the Department of War had stalled over its refusal to allow mass domestic surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth then moved to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk, the company said. Anthropic called the move unlawful and sued, and in October 2026 a defence official told the BBC the Pentagon had stopped using its products.152829
Anthropic has also faced copyright claims. In Bartz v. Anthropic, a class action in federal court in California, it agreed a $1.5 billion settlement, which won final approval in July 2026. A separate case brought in 2024 by Concord Music Group was still active in October 2026.252627
