Custom GPT

In short

A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT set up for one purpose, with its own instructions, uploaded reference files and chosen tools. OpenAI launched them in 2023 and plans to retire them in favour of plugins, starting with Enterprise workspaces in December 2026.

First described
Announced by OpenAI on 6 November 2023 in "Introducing GPTs"1.

OpenAI introduced GPTs on 6 November 2023 as "custom versions of ChatGPT" that anyone could build without coding, by giving instructions and extra knowledge and picking skills such as web search, image making or data analysis1. Builders could also add "actions" that connect a GPT to outside services through their APIs1.

The GPT Store followed on 10 January 2024. OpenAI said users had already created more than 3 million GPTs by then2.

Under the hood a GPT is not a new model. It is ChatGPT with a saved configuration: instructions that work like a system prompt, uploaded files it can consult, conversation starters, and selected tools3. OpenAI's help centre notes GPTs do not use your saved memory, custom instructions or past chats; each conversation starts fresh3.

The product is winding down. As of October 2026, OpenAI's help centre says it plans to retire custom GPTs and recommends moving workflows to "Plugins". Retirement for affected Enterprise workspaces is planned for 11 December 2026, with other plans expected to follow the same timeline. New GPTs can no longer be created or published on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro, though existing GPTs can still be used3.

Example

A secondary school teacher might have built a GPT loaded with the GCSE English Literature set texts and an instruction to quiz pupils without giving away answers, then shared the link with the class.

Why it matters

Custom GPTs were many people's first taste of tailoring a chatbot to a job. If you rely on one, check OpenAI's notices: the feature is being retired and work may need moving.

Questions people ask

Are custom GPTs being discontinued?

Yes. OpenAI's help centre says it plans to retire custom GPTs and move users to plugins. Retirement for affected Enterprise workspaces is planned for 11 December 2026, and other plans are expected to follow the same timeline3.

Can I still make a custom GPT on ChatGPT Plus?

No. OpenAI says new GPT creation and publishing are no longer available on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Existing GPTs can still be used, and editing them needs an eligible subscription3.

Can the person who built a GPT read my chats with it?

No. OpenAI says GPT builders cannot view individual conversations users have with their GPTs. But if a GPT connects to outside services, parts of what you type may be sent to them3.
