AI adoption

In short

AI adoption is the process of people or organisations beginning to use artificial intelligence in real work or daily life. It means more than buying a tool: it includes regular use, changed workflows and evidence that the system is being put into practice1.

When researchers measure AI adoption, they may ask whether an organisation uses AI at all, whether it uses generative AI in a particular business function, or how many people use a tool. These measures are not interchangeable, so an adoption percentage needs its population, question and date1.

Adoption usually has several stages. A team may experiment with a chatbot, run a limited pilot, connect a system to company data, and then make it part of a repeatable workflow. Training, access rules, evaluation, security and a clear owner can determine whether a pilot becomes everyday use2.

Stanford HAI reported that 88% of surveyed organisations used AI in 2025, while 70% used generative AI in at least one business function. The report also said AI-agent deployment remained in the single digits across nearly all functions1. Those figures describe survey responses, not every organisation in the world.

AI adoption is not the same as AI success. A company can report use without saving money, improving quality or changing jobs. Measuring outcomes means checking the task, the baseline, the cost, the error rate and whether people continue to use the system safely12.

Example

A retailer may first let staff use a chatbot to draft product descriptions. Adoption becomes more meaningful when the retailer connects the tool to its catalogue, adds review rules, tracks errors and uses the process for new products every week.

Why it matters

Adoption figures are often quoted as proof that AI is transforming work. Understanding what was measured helps a reader distinguish a trial, a paid licence and a dependable change in how people work.

Questions people ask

What does AI adoption mean for a company?

It means the company is using AI in at least some work or business function. The depth can range from experiments to systems embedded in repeatable workflows, so the specific measure matters1.

Is AI adoption the same as AI use?

They are often used similarly, but adoption usually suggests that use is being taken up and incorporated by a group or organisation. A one-off experiment may count as use without showing broad adoption.

How is AI adoption measured?

Surveys can ask organisations or people whether they use AI, where they use it and how often. Stronger evaluations also compare outcomes such as time, quality, cost, errors and continued usage12.

Is AI adoption growing?

Stanford HAI reported that surveyed organisational AI use rose to 88% in 2025, from 55% in 2023. Its figures are survey results, so they should not be treated as a count of every organisation1.
